Senior Electronic Design Engineer

LI-The R&D group in Seer Green is seeking a Senior Electronics Design Engineer. The team consists of 15 people who are focused on the development of scientific instrumentation. We are a multi-disciplinary team that historically have been more research oriented focusing primarily on concept generation for new products. We wish to grow the team and expand our activities to include product design and development for manufacture at our factory in Wales. There will also be an element of support for ongoing manufacture.
The instrumentation is mainly opto-mechanical and opto-electronic in nature and the systems engineers develop the overall system concept and sub-system specifications necessary to meet the product requirements. Due to the high-performance nature of the equipment, it is often very challenging in design terms to achieve the required precision, stability, speed and cost performance goals.
We wish to recruit a highly qualified person at a senior level with an electronics background and at least 5 years of relevant experience preferably in design and development of high precision instrumentation and who is able to take responsibility for the technical direction and design development of products.
The successful candidate will apply electronics and engineering knowledge and experience in combination with good design and problem-solving ability to develop products that meet performance and cost targets and that are completed on time. They will operate in a central role within a multidisciplinary project team and take responsibility for technical leadership, product specification, systems design, evaluation programs and troubleshooting. An understanding of all aspects of system design is critical.
Responsibilities
Job Requirements
- Project leadership of electronic aspects of product development and manufacturing sustaining
- From time to time to troubleshoot manufacturing production issues.
- To work with other members of the product development team to translate product requirements into functional specifications
- Undertake sub-system design and analysis including selection of technical approach and definition of sub-systems specifications
- Conduct technical reviews and react to input from other members of the project team
- Define and conduct a structured program of sub-system design development that is aligned with project commercial goals and manages project risk
- To procure parts and manage suppliers for the assembly of prototype boards.
- To commission and evaluate sub-systems and components during product development to ensure their quality and fitness of purpose
- Development of manufacturing assembly and test processes including the design and build of test fixtures
- Production and validation of manufacturing documentation
- Work with manufacturing to provide guidance, training and troubleshooting support during pilot batch manufacture
- To implement firmware or VHDL that may be required to support the design
- To write and present technical project reports including design documentation and performance validation reviews
- Responsible for product performance and quality
Qualifications
- Minimum of good Honours Degree in Electronics
Required Experience
- Approximately 5 years practical experience in design and development of new products in one or more of these areas:
- Analogue circuit design, layout and optimization, specifically for low signal amplification and high-performance closed loop control systems (
- Digital signal processing, including an excellent understanding and application of sampling theory, noise reduction, filtering and digital signal conditioning
- VHDL (less important)and low-level programming in C and assembler – useful
- EMC / compliance testing
- Experience of product development within a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Previous involvement in most aspects of the development life cycle, from initial analysis and design, to implementation, testing, documentation and transition to manufacture
- Experience in reviewing designs and defining technical approach (NPIs)
- Ability to assess technical risk and to formulate an effective risk management strategy for both development and manufacture, including design and execution of evaluation program
Preferred Experience
- Working knowledge of firmware
- Experience of Altium Designer
- Physics knowledge and application of optical detectors, thermal management, magnetic & electric fields, and semi-conductors
- Familiarity with product design methodologies such as a life cycle model or stage-gate process
