AVIRE – Engineering Technician – Electronics R&D (Full or Part Time)

Purpose & Background

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting our Research & Development team by ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of our R&D workshop and laboratories, making sure that equipment is calibrated and maintained, that consumables are re-stocked and ensuring general tidiness of the workspace.

You will also be assisting the R&D team with a wide range of prototyping and test activities, including the build-up of prototype units through soldering, wiring and other electronics hand skills, and utilising test equipment to help diagnose faults.

This role has arisen due to the growth of the business which allows us to bring in a technician dedicated to this work, where it has previously formed part of the responsibilities of R&D engineers.

We recognise that everyone’s engineering story is a little different, and so we welcome applications from candidates who may have followed a non-traditional career path or taken a career break for any reason.

What will you be doing?

Stewardship of the laboratory and workshop spaces:

  • Calibration and maintenance of test equipment and facilities, including arranging third party support where required.
  • Organising and maintaining R&D test equipment and facilities to a high standard.
  • Maintaining asset registers.
  • Procurement of consumables, spare parts, and workshop/lab equipment.
  • Overseeing the safety of the workshops and laboratories, ensuring that users are appropriately trained and qualified to use the equipment and that they are aware of any relevant safety hazards and risks.
  • Training engineers (and others as required) on how to use the lab/equipment.

Assisting with R&D activities:

  • Conducting component research and ordering components for prototyping.
  • Building PCBs at component level.
  • Soldering, wiring and assembly of prototypes in support of R&D activities.
  • Conducting product testing following a defined qualification test procedure (QTP) and providing feedback on the quality of QTPs.
  • Arranging prototype manufacturing builds and collaborating remotely with our factories in Barcelona (Spain), České Budějovice (the Czech Republic) and West Sussex, Wisconsin (United States).
  • Working with production to update parts lists and raise Engineering Change Notes.
  • Preparing products for field trials (customer beta testing) and supporting coordination of field trials.
  • Specification and development of test equipment, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Assisting the customer service and R&D team in fault finding, isolation and resolution across Avires product range.
  • Ensuring the standards within AVIREs internal database are in-date, monitoring for changes in standards and signposting these changes to the R&D team.

What type of person are you?

  • Confident in reading and interpreting electronic schematics and layouts.
  • Able to build prototype boards to a schematic and diagnose and test faults.
  • Good electronics workshop skills, including wiring, soldering, use of scopes and other test equipment.
  • Experienced in isolating and repairing faults down to component level.
  • Experience in use of CAD and 3d printers would be a bonus, but is not essential.
  • Good communication and excellent organization skills.
  • Be a self-starter with a can-do attitude.
  • Have an analytical and proactive approach.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications & Experience

Avire is open to hearing from individuals from all backgrounds. While we think most candidates are likely to have the following qualifications, if you think you otherwise meet the criteria in this job description, please apply regardless of your qualifications.

  • HNC/HND and/or City & Guilds qualification in an electronics related discipline.
  • Prior experience of working as a technician supporting R&D and prototyping activities. Candidates must have prior experience of using their own initiative and creativity to solve problems within a dynamic working environment.

Flexible and Remote Working

Flexible hours and part-time working options are available for this role, please talk to us about this as part of the application/interview process.

The hands-on nature of this role means that most of the work must be conducted on site, though occasional remote working may be possible.
