PURPOSE OF ROLE
As Power Electronics Engineer, you will be providing expert knowledge as the focal point for the Power Engineering and Electronics design activities within CIL. Encompassing principal design, verification and manufacturing proposals whilst maintaining a high level of industry knowledge to keep CIL products relevant and competitive.
PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design automotive-grade inverter hardware such as semiconductor power modules (high-voltage
wide-bandgap SiC and GaN), DC/DC, DC/AC converters, gate-drivers and DC-link capacitor modules
• Characterise, test and model key power electronic components and sub-assemblies
• Advise, perform, and own power module qualification testing to industry or customer standards
• Schematic capture and PCB/DBC/AMB circuit layout and analysis
• Produce technical documentation including manufacturing packs and test procedures

• Track developments in manufacturing techniques in Power Electronics and related industries to
maintain up to date manufacturing processes knowledge
• Use of reliability, risk or safety analysis tools for the analysis of hardware, such as FTA, DFMEA
• Simulation and evaluation of electrical and thermal models
• Use of design and analytical CAD packages such as Anysy Simplorer and Workbench, PLECS,
Simulink, Matlab & LT/PSPICE software or equivalent
• Interfacing with and exceeding customer expectations
• Attendance at customer, supplier or academic events across the UK (periodically) and Europe (rarely) to perform the role of product expert to front the capability of the company
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Support Health & Safety legislation and compliance with preparation and maintenance of relevant documentation.
• Establish positive working relationships, motivate and support to ensure a multi skilled and flexible team.
• Responsible for knowing and upholding the H&S Policy and for working in a safe manner and
reporting all unsafe or unhealthy conditions or acts.
• Identify & support training needs.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS
• MEng/MSC Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (PhD with experience desirable)
• Extensive power electronics experience with a focus on wide-bandgap power module design
and packaging
• Experience designing and working with a range of GaN and SiC die variants and applications
• Practical experience with DC/DC and DC/AC converters, gate drivers, high frequency inductive and
capacitive components, and EMC/EMI requirements
• Proficient use of various modelling and simulation tools; Anysy Simplorer and Workbench, PLECS,
Simulink, Matlab & LT/PSPICE software or equivalent
• Proficient in 3D solid modelling software (Solidworks desirable)
• Extensive experience with development, analysis, and validation of design solutions using
prototyping, simulation and test techniques
• Support in development and testing of robust and reliable hardware/software solutions
• Capable of mentoring junior engineers in product and process engineering best practice
• Familiarity with relevant automotive legislation and guidelines is desirable
• Experience using and designing inverter power-stages for automotive traction drives, is preferred
but not essential
• Knowledge of Electric machine control theory preferred, but not essential
• A practical knowledge of functional safety standards such as ISO26262, is preferred but not essential
